Job Adverts in China

What do you need to look for in a job advert in China?

We have broken down the top things to consider so you can figure out what is most important to you.

Salary

Salary is obviously the most important part of the advert! How much are you looking for?

Things to consider:

  • Compare salaries of the positions you’re looking at to give you an idea. Is it what you’re expecting? You may be able to increase or lower your expectations depending on this.

  • Different cities have different salaries depending on the cost of living in those cities. It’s not always what you can earn, but what you can save!

  • If you’ve only had training centre experience and are wanting to move to a public/bilingual/international school, you may have to manage your pay expectations as it is perceived you are starting a “new” job working in a proper school.

Holidays

Holidays are always important! However much we can love our job, we shouldn’t live to work.

Things to look for:

  • What are the holidays?

  • Are they fully paid/half paid?

  • Do you only get fully paid holidays if you sign a 2 year contract? (This is becoming more common, and may be worthwhile staying at a school you like for two years; it is much easier for you than moving elsewhere and transferring your visa, builds loyalty with the school AND looks better on your CV to stay in a position for longer than a year).

Benefits

Schools will offer other benefits! Here are some of the things to look out for:

  • Free housing (could be on-campus / off-campus) or a housing stipend

  • Flight reimbursements

  • Health insurance (all schools should offer this - but some offer international health insurance)

  • End of contract bonus (this may be a set amount, a percentage of your salary, etc)

  • Free meals during work time

  • Assistance with professional growth / training (for example a school may give you IB/Montessori training and you gain certificates)

  • Free / discounted tuition for dependents

It’s worth deciding what’s important to you. Is it the holidays? Is it professional growth? Are you looking for benefits for your whole family? Decide what’s important to you to decide which schools suit you.
