Stop Making These Intro Video Mistakes
Why Do I Need To Make An Intro Video?
An intro video supports your overall application, by allowing a school to see the extra details that they can’t get from your CV. Mainly, how you present yourself, and how you come across in person. This means that an intro video is a VERY IMPORTANT part of your application.
It’s important to get it right, but don’t worry! Our guide will help you to make an intro video that ticks all the boxes.
Dress for the job you want. Think, what do teachers wear in my home country? A shirt or smart top is ideal.
Speak clearly and slowly. Decide what you want to say first, and give it a couple of practice takes. Use your ‘teaching voice’.
Minimise background noise, use a plain background and natural lighting to ensure good video quality.
Recording on your phone is fine. Prop it up on a stable surface, or use a phone stand to minimise shaky camera work.
Use our 4 points to cover the main content of your video - that’s really all you need to say!
If you want to add in any specific achievements, you can, but keep it succinct and relevant.
Your video doesn’t need to be more than a minute or two. Aim for 90 seconds!
Smile! This is your chance to make your personality stand out and secure an interview.
Tips:
Save your intro video in the same location as your CV, references, cover letter etc. to ensure it’s always easily available to send out.
Look online for examples of ‘good intro videos’ to get a clear idea of what a good one looks like.
Don’t worry about fancy editing. It can be a nice touch, but not a requirement.
Get a second opinion by asking a friend to view your video before you send it out. They might spot something you missed, or be able to give insight as a viewer.
AVOID:
Rambling, either by giving too much detail or including things that aren’t relevant
Rushing. Take time to make your intro video, and the effort will pay off
Fidgeting, or not keeping eye contact. It doesn’t translate well on camera.
We’ve seen a lot of intro videos, and by following our top tips it shouldn’t take long to create a video that gives a great first impression and strengthens your application. Good luck!
