Popular Middle & High School Curricula
We’ve had a look before at other curricula – focusing more on overall or kindergarten curricula. We thought we’d revisit this topic and look at the middle and high school curricula!
There are many popular middle and high school curricula in China but the three we have written below are generally the ones we see the most.
1. The International Cambridge Curriculum
iGCSE
The iGCSE is the International General Certificate of Secondary Education for 14-16 year olds. Simply put, the international version of the original GCSE, which comes from the UK.
The iGCSE has a wide variety of content and will set the student up in whatever direction they choose to study further. It is seen as truly international and said to be far more diverse than other curricula.
AS and A Level
AS and A Levels are targeted at 16-19 year olds, offer 55+ subjects for students to be able to find their strengths and weaknesses. The learner will gain skills in working and communicating in English, the ability to present well researched arguments, being able make judgements and recommendations, along with many more options.
2. IB – MYP and DP
If you’ve worked in China for a while you already may know about IB. IB stands for International Baccalaureate and is a well known international curriculum. IB essentially sets students up to go to universities anywhere in the world, helping the learner obtain skills for both school and life.
IB MYP (Middle Years Programme)
The MYP is targeted at 11-16 year olds and encourages the students to learn practical skills and independent thinking appropriate for their age level. By design, there should be something to engage any and every student to find their strengths.
IB DP (Diploma Programme)
The DP is aimed at students aged 16-19. The idea is that it will develop this age group further physically, mentally, emotionally and morally. Students learn more independence and offered a wide range of resources to achieve what they need to. High standards are expected.
3. American Curriculum
Middle School
The American Middle School curriculum covers ages roughly 11 to 13. The aim is to cover the core subjects of English, language, mathematics, science, arts and social studies. Students will additionally learn PE, other languages, drama and other subjects.
It is encouraged for students to be active in extracurricular activities to encourage social interaction and personal growth.
High School
The American High School Curriculum caters to students roughly 14 to 18. It continues on as it does from middle school, developing the core subjects further and to continue with personal interests for extracurricular activities.
We hope you liked the breakdown of just some of the middle and high school curricula that are popular in China.
