Feeling stuck in China?

We have talked a lot about the people who are stuck overseas, but how about the expats who are currently in China?

Although we are very fortunate to be in the position of a secure job, safety and freedom within the country, the fact that being so far away from family and friends and not being able to see them, and not knowing how long for – is incredibly difficult in itself.

Especially as it’s coming into winter and Christmas is on the way, it is common for many people to feel low. Taking into consideration what a rollercoaster of a year it’s been, it’s not surprising!

We have compiled a few ways to (hopefully) help you through this tough period if you need it.

1. Find a support network

Support comes in a million different ways. Find the people you trust and make sure spend time with them. Find/start supportive WeChat groups. Don’t isolate yourself completely – make sure you get out and about. However alone you feel, you aren’t.

2. Do the things you love

Sometimes doing the things you love take effort and you can lose motivation. Don’t wait for the motivation – just don’t think about it and do it anyway. Do you enjoy taking trips? Are you an art lover, rock climber or enjoy visiting new cities? Make time for the interests that make you happy.

Remember, you’re not the only one with these interests – hunt for the WeChat groups that have these communities!

3. Make the most of your time in China

Although we are all “stuck” here, remember that China is absolutely incredible, with a million new things to see and experience. When you do eventually go home, it will be great to know you saw more than just The Great Wall.

If you would prefer an organized tour, most cities have companies who organize trips for expats at the weekends and holidays. It’s a great place to start and see the lesser known places in China!

Here are some great places you could go to over the Christmas/ Chinese New Year period:

  • Sanya – beach holiday in winter anyone?

  • Xiamen – another beautiful coastal city, a little bit cooler but still nice temperatures

  • Harbin – for a true snowy winter holiday – visit the snow and ice festival

  • Shenzhen and Guangzhou – Pleasant weather and great Chinese New Year celebrations

  • Yellow Mountains – Wrap up warm for an incredible hike

4. Keep in contact with home

Don’t keep yourself so busy you don’t check in with the people back home! You’ll be as happy to hear from them as they do for you.

5. DON’T just do nothing

If you do feel particularly low and want to seek professional help – do it. Everyone needs to sometimes.

We recommend contacting Lifeline on 400-821-1215. 10am-10pm, a confidential crisis helpline & chatline for the English speaking community.
